[Short #97] NFTs on your LG TV + More RTFKT News

Will TV's be the next portal into the Metaverse? 🤔

For those of you that celebrated the long weekend in the US, hope you’re back feeling refreshed!

I spent time hanging out with my parents, watching college football (my alma mater USC actually looks like they’re worth watching this season), watching live standup comedy, and doing some urban hiking!

Back to that typing grind! ⌨️

LG enters the NFT game

Over the weekend I came across the following headline:

Source

The TV manufacturer has partnered with Hedera to allow users to purchase NFTs on that blockchain.

What’s also interesting is how this new feature is being rolled out:

It seems like the first drop will be in a couple of weeks, and will be focused on art for now.

I’m curious to see what the roadmap looks like for LG as they roll out this initiative and gather more feedback:

  • Will LG expand beyond Hedera? Is the NFT partnership exclusive?

  • Will LG expand beyond art? How will the NFTs be integrated to provide further utility beyond visual and emotional utility with art?

  • What will consumers be able to do with their NFTs?

Samsung

…has been integrating NFTs into its TVs as well.

Samsung’s NFT platform is pre-installed into the new TV’s.

However, purchasing the NFTs requires the Nifty Gateway app to be installed.

Seems Samsung is focusing on NFT art as well.

TBH, the bit with “Try viewing your NFTs in full screen mode, which provides a viewing experience without any restrictions or watermarks and plays your NFTs in an endless loop” translates as:

“Your NFTs can be a wallpaper for your TV!”

Not the best value prop…but it’s a start I guess 🤷‍♂️

Feature

Now that there is a broader set of players in the space that I’m aware of, it’s interesting comparing the TV manufacturer approach vs. the hardware approach that Feature seems to be taking (wrote about them here last month).

Feature is focused on creating hardware (and content) that is agnostic of the TV manufacturer.

Interestingly enough, Feature positions itself against content aggregators like Hulu versus TV manufacturers like LG and Samsung. 👀

Not sure if that’s a hint at what Hulu, Netflix, and other SVOD (subscription video on demand) providers are planning…but it’s clear that everyone in the TV and content ecosystem wants a piece of this emerging pie.

TLDR: This is what’s going on from what I can tell:

There’s probably a lot more coming from LG and Samsung, so I’m curious to see how they flesh out their NFT integration plans for the Web3 consumer.

Have you watched TV before? If so, share or subscribe!

MOAR RTFKT News

The RTFKT team continues to be several steps ahead of the pack. If you don’t know what they’ve been up to check out my Dive on RTFKT and their recent Forging announcement.

Yesterday the team dropped this sneak peek. If sneak peeks were a dessert, this is a whole dessert sampler.

Again, this is a great example of AX (Announcement Experience). I think I’m subconsciously trying to make the term ‘AX’ a thing, so I’ll probably do a piece about it later this week 😂

@iamashchild has a nice overview of what this preview may suggest. I believe it also bolsters my 3 predictions around expanded forging, physical goods authentication, and phygital data.

MY $DRIP THEORY - ur clone’s rarity level, which rises w/ the rarity of the item u EQUIP, determines your $DRIP earn rate (like in games) - how is it earned? - move-to-earn using physical shoe - clone in-game (unreal by @EpicGames) doing quests (MNLTH2 anyone?)

Regardless of what RTFKT’s plans are, I think it’s clear that their ambitions are much more than just being an extension of Nike’s foray into the Metaverse.

They’re building a whole ecosystem.

See you tomorrow folks!
